About Vedic Milan

Vedic Milan is a free, private, browser-based tool that performs classical Vedic marriage compatibility analysis using the Ashtakoota Guna Milan system — the same 36-point matching framework used by traditional Jyotishis (Vedic astrologers) across Bharat for centuries.

How the Calculation Works

For each partner, we compute the precise position of the Moon at the moment of birth (your Janma Nakshatra). The Moon's location determines 6 of the 8 kootas directly. Mars' position is used for the Mangal Dosha check.

The combined score out of 36 is the Guna Milan result.

Mangal Dosha

Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik) occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from your Lagna (ascendant) or Moon. The classical rules of cancellation include Mars in its own sign (Aries/Scorpio), in exaltation (Capricorn), in Leo, or when both partners are Manglik.

⚠️ Disclaimer

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is a traditional belief system rooted in thousands of years of Indian spiritual and cultural heritage. It is not a science in the modern empirical sense, and predictions are not deterministic.

Acknowledgements

Built with reference to classical texts on Jyotish including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Jataka Parijata, and Phaladeepika. The 27 Nakshatra system, Yoni classifications, Gana assignments, and Bhakoot pairs follow the widely-used North Indian / Vedic tradition.

About the Algorithm

The Guna Milan and Mangal Dosha calculation logic in Vedic Milan is implemented from classical Jyotish references including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch. 95 on Ashtakoota matching), Phaladeepika (Ch. 16 on Mangal Dosha cancellation), and Jataka Parijata (Nakshatra / Yoni / Gana tables).

The 8-koota weighting (Varna 1pt, Vashya 2pt, Tara 3pt, Yoni 4pt, Graha Maitri 5pt, Gana 6pt, Bhakoot 7pt, Nadi 8pt), the 27 Nakshatra mapping, the 14 Yoni pairs, and the 6 Bhakoot dosha pairs all follow the widely accepted North Indian tradition used by practising Jyotishis across Bharat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my Bhakoot score is 0?

A Bhakoot score of 0 means your Rashi pair forms one of the six classical Bhakoot dosha combinations (5/9, 6/6, or 8/12). The most common remedies are Ganesha puja, Saturday donations, and seeking elders' blessings. Many modern astrologers treat Bhakoot as a softer signal than classical texts suggest — read it together with the other 7 kootas. See our detailed Bhakoot Dosha guide.

Can a Manglik marry a Non-Manglik after age 28?

Classical texts vary on this. Some North Indian traditions teach that after age 28 Mars' malefic influence mellows, but most practising Jyotishis do not consider age an automatic cancellation. The stronger cancellation rules are: Mars in own sign (Aries/Scorpio), exaltation (Capricorn), in Leo, or both partners being Manglik. See our Manglik Cancellation Rules article.

What is the difference between Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha?

Nadi Dosha relates to the Nakshatra of each partner — if both share the same Nadi (Vata/Pitta/Kapha), the dosha triggers and Nadi score = 0. Nadi is the highest-weighted koata (8 points) and is associated with health and progeny concerns.

Bhakoot Dosha is based on the Rashi (Moon-sign) pair, not the Nakshatra. Six specific Rashi combinations yield a Bhakoot score of 0 (worth 7 points), and are associated with love, family welfare and financial growth.

Both are remedied through specific Vedic pujas, but they operate on different chart levels.

Is Vedic Milan accurate?

Vedic Milan follows the classical Ashtakoota formula exactly as described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The 36-point score reflects traditional Jyotish practice. However, compatibility matching is one part of a complete horoscope analysis — it does not replace examination of full birth charts, planetary dashas, and transits by a qualified Jyotishi.
