Mangal Dosha is one of the most discussed astrological factors in Indian marriage traditions. It occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in certain houses of the birth chart — specifically the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from your Lagna (ascendant) or Moon.

🏠 Bhakoot Dosha — Causes, Effects & Remedies

Bhakoot (भकूट) is the 7th of the 8 Ashtakoota Gunas, carrying 7 points. Unlike Tara or Yoni which measure compatibility directly, Bhakoot is based purely on the Rashi (Moon-sign) pair formed by the two partners. Certain Rashi combinations are considered inauspicious — when the pair forms one of the six classical Bhakoot Doshas, the score drops to zero.

How Bhakoot is Calculated

Count the Rashi difference from the boy's Moon to the girl's Moon (Aries=1, Taurus=2 … Pisces=12). If the difference is 5/7, 6/6, or 8/12, the Bhakoot pair is doshic and yields 0 out of 7 points. The same calculation works in reverse (girl → boy); both directions give the same classification.

✅ Manglik Cancellation Rules — When Dosha Doesn't Apply

A Mangal Dosha reading is rarely black-and-white. Classical Jyotish texts (notably Phaladeepika and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) lay out a hierarchy of cancellation rules. If any one of these conditions applies, the dosha is considered partially or fully cancelled, and most families proceed without elaborate Mangal remedies.

1. Mars in Own Sign or Exaltation (Strongest Cancellation)

When Mars occupies Aries or Scorpio (its own signs) or Capricorn (exaltation), the aggressive nature of Mars is said to be "digested" — its energy is constructive rather than harmful. This is treated by most astrologers as a complete cancellation regardless of which house it falls in.

2. Mars in Leo

Leo is the sign of the Sun, the natural king. Mars here behaves like a minister serving the king — disciplined and protective rather than rebellious. This placement is widely treated as a partial cancellation of the dosha.

3. Both Partners Manglik

When both the boy and girl have Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house, the two doshas cancel each other. The logic: a fiery partner matched with another fiery partner produces a balanced household rather than a one-sided conflict.

4. Benefic Aspect or Conjunction

If Mars in the dosha house is aspected or conjunct with Jupiter, Venus, or Mercury (the natural benefics), its malefic effect is softened. Jupiter's aspect on Mars is considered especially protective.

5. Mars in the 2nd House (Conditional)

Some texts treat Mars in the 2nd house as automatically cancelled because the 2nd house belongs to the family-of-origin rather than the marital house (7th). Most modern astrologers still read it as a mild dosha but rarely block a match on this basis alone.

6. Specific Bhava & Rashi Lordships

If Mars is the lord of the 1st or 4th house and is placed in the 7th, 8th, or 12th, its role is interpreted as a functional benefic rather than a malefic. Conversely, Mars as 6th, 8th, or 12th lord in a dusthana is reinforced dosha — but these are deeper chart-level concerns beyond the basic Guna Milan compatibility tool.

• Both partners have an uncancelled dosha in the same house.
• Mars is in the 7th house (directly marital) with no cancellation.
